Ashburton is approximately one hour’s drive south of Christchurch – which is the South Island’s biggest city. Ashburton is semi-rural setting, not too big but not too small. Ashburton has a couple of vineyards, a couple of golf courses and a huge variety of skiing opportunities only a short drive away. The most popular is Mt Hutt which is only 60mins to chairlift. There are a number of smaller fields a bit further away but well worth visiting. Fishing is also popular in the area and the local lake, Lake Hood, is beautiful. Ashburton is really well located for trips around the South Island at weekends (e.g. 2 hours to spa resort at Tekapo, 3 hours to Hanmer Hot Springs) and for weekend flights via Christchurch to the North Island and Sydney. Climate is warm dry summers and a frosty 4-6 weeks in winter. It gets around 30 inches of rain per year which tends to come in heavy short spells rather than persistent grey rainy days – we have just had 4 days of rain to break the “drought” and that is quite unusual to get that many rainy days in a row.
